2014 Breeders Sale and National Show

Hampshire Downs establish 3,000gns record

Record ram lamb average £771, 72% clearance

Hampshire Downs achieved a new 3,000gns record price together with a £771 ram lamb average and 72% clearance at Stratford on Saturday 28 June at the association’s annual national show and sale.

“Competition for quality stock was evident throughout from both breeders and commercial producers who had travelled from throughout the UK and beyond, and who not only contributed to a strong average but also a record price marking a new high point for the association in its 125th year,” commented auctioneer, Ed Cox.

Sale leader at 3,000gns was a ram lamb within the breed’s top 10% performance, by the homebred Thorbeck Gladiator and out of a Kelsey sired ewe from Jim and Jane Birkwood’s 50 ewe flock based at Thoresby, Grimsby. He was secured by Harry Middleditch for his family’s 35 ewe St Pauls flock, based at Belchamp St Paul, Sudbury.” He commented: “This ram lamb caught my eye earlier in the season; he is a well put together sheep from the shoulder through to the giggot.” Mr Birkwood added: “We’re over the moon, and to successfully breed a quality lamb which has introduced a new price record for the breed,”

Next entry in the ring was another Thorbeck bred ram lamb, this time within the breed’s top 1%, by Pode Hole Knockout and out of Yarcombe sired ewe. He sold for 1,010gns to Dutch breeders, Messrs Kort, Beemster.

The day’s second leading bid of 1,500gns went to the champion SRS ram lamb, within the breed’s top 1% from Kevin McCarthy, Comber, County Down. Sired by the homebred Ballycreelly Why Not and out of a Homefield sired ewe, he returned over the water with Tony McGrath, Dungannon, County Tyrone who recouped some of his spend after achieving 900gns for a ram lamb by Ballycreelly What Next and out of a Yarcombe sired ewe. He was knocked down sold to Graham and Judith Galbraith, Kendal.

Next in the ring was a full brother to the SRS champion from Ballycreelly making 650gns to Bethany Phillips, Newcastle on Tyne. Minutes later, Mr McCarthy offered an untrimmed ram lamb, by Ballycreelly What Thedevil and out of a Yarcombe sired ewe. He sold for 1,200gns to B Tully, Bridgwater.

Shearling rams by What Thedevil were also in demand with an entry from Mr McCarthy selling for 600gns to S Collett, Temple Guiting, Cheltenham. Earlier in the day Mr McCarthy paid 390gns for a Court Jester sired ewe lamb from Henry Derryman, Honiton.

Other ram lamb leaders included an entry at 1,180gns from Barry, Eirlys and Stuart Jones, Wolfcastle, Haverfordwest to HJW Knight and Son, Marshfield, Chippenham. This lamb was by the homebred Maes-Glas Commander and out of a Yarcombe sired ewe.

Heading the shearling rams at 690gns was Whitehead Fellini, by the homebred Whitehead Taffy from Robert Vincent, Gelliwen, Carmarthen to David and Tracy Blenkharn, Plumpton, Penrith.

Jim Cresswell, Diss, Norfolk led the shearling ewe section with two entries by Westland Domino. First in the ring made 520gns to Roy McFarlane, Bridge of Allan, Stirling whilst the next entry sold for 560gns to Stephen Short, Southowram, Halifax who also went to 610gns for the top ewe lamb by Westland Gremlin from HJW Knight.

Averages: 7 shearling rams £527.25; 23 ram lambs £771.29; 8 shearling ewes £464.63; 9 ewe lambs £338.92.
