Carlisle Hampshire Downs peak at 1,100gns

Hampshire Down females met a strong trade selling to a top of 1,100gns at the breed association’s official sale in Carlisle on 23 September.

“Quality ewes and ewe lambs were in demand selling both to established breeders and newcomers at the ringside,” commented breed association secretary, Janet Hill.

Sale leader at 1,100gns was the overall Show Champion, a shearling ewe by Yarcombe Flashman from KP and AE McCarthy, Ballycreely to new breeders M and V Collins, York.

The McCarthy’s secured the next highest lot at 850gns, a ewe within the breed’s top 10% by Yarcombe Topper and scanned in lamb to Ballycreelly Irish Ranger who is within the breed’s top 1%. She sold to M Jones and R Smith, Telford who also went to 600gns twice for two more entries. First was another ewe within the breed’s top 10% from the McCarthys, this time by Ballycreelly What The Devil, whilst the couple’s second 600gns bid was made for a ewe lamb by Kelsey Icon from Graham and Judith Galbraith, Graylen Flock .

The Galbraiths also took the third highest bid of the day at 800gns for a shearling ewe by their homebred Graylen Harley to Jodie Hooks, Halikeld who also paid 700gns for same breeders’ Reserve Champion, an eyecatching ewe lamb sired by Kelsey Icon who has figures to match her looks. Jodie Hooks also secured for 650gns a ewe lamb by Clogherny Eric from KP and AE McCarthy.

Graylen stock were again in demand with a Yarcombe Iceman sired shearling ewe selling for 650gns to Louis Stainthorpe, Whitby.

Leading the older ewes both in the show and the sale was Alan and Fiona McCornick’s Ardachie Flock, winning the class and selling for 620gns a home-bred two shear ewe by Ardachie Alfie to Carl and Julie Padgett, Tilerybank.

Two shearling ewes shared a 600gns bid. First was by the homebred Glanrafon Marley from Borsey and Sivill, selling to Adam Strickland, Lambrigg whilst an entry by Maes-Glas Gabriel from E and B and SA Jones, sold to Stephen Short, Highcliffe.

First prized shearling ram from the Jones’ Maes Glas flock sold for 400gns to QMS Borders Monitor farm hosts, R Mitchell and Sons, Hawick, Roxburghshire who also took a ram lamb at 400gns from the same home and a ewe lamb at 420gns from McCarthy, Ballycreelly.

Quality Hampshire Downs met a strong demand selling to a top of 650gns at the Association’s show and sale in Stirling on Wednesday 24 May.

The leading 650gns bid was made for the day’s champion, a shearling ram within the breed’s top 25%, by Thorbeck Heineken (80X14150) by Thorbeck Gladiator and out of a Pode Hole bred ewe (by Pode Hole Guiness) from Mrs and Mrs D Middleditch and Son’s St Paul flock, Sudbury, Suffolk. The buyer was Jodi Hooks and Liam Gouldthorpe taking him home to their Halikeld flock in North Yorkshire. Another Heineken sired shearling ram from the same breeders made 450gns selling locally to commercial farmer Kenny Dickson, Fintry, Stirling.

The Middleditch’s success continued in the female ring where they topped the section with a Heineken sired shearling ewe selling at 520gns to Rob Dewey, Lathockar Flock, whilst another shearling ewe by the same sire went for 300gns to Bruce Steel, Powblack Flock.  Junior member Bruce bought a total of 5 females, reinvesting his proceeds from sales of his cross-bred Hampshire Down lambs through the market earlier in the morning.

The day’s second highest call at 600gns was made by Michaela Cornish, Shamrose Flock, Thirsk, for a shearling ram by Wattisfield What If by a homebred ewe from R Brand and Son’s Eastfortune flock, by East Fortune Balfour,.

Heading the ram lamb trade at 420gns was the class winner from Helen Shepherd, Callander Flock.  First time at an official sale, Helen headed off a strong class of seasoned competitors and impressed not only those around the ring but also the judge who bought this well grown lamb by East Fortune Archie, for his Ashley Flock in Northern Ireland.

Heading the ewe lamb trade at 500gns was the reserve champion, an entry within the breed’s top 10%, by the homebred Graylen Harley (by Graylen D’artagnan) from Graham and Judith Galbraith, Endmoor Flock. The buyer was Trevor Todd, Ballynahinch, Co Down, who also went to 400gns for another ewe lamb from the same breeders, this time by Yarcombe Iceman. The Galbraiths sold two Iceman sired shearling ewes at 420gns each. The first entry went to A and H Rae, Ellon, Aberdeenshire, and the second to Glass and Robinson, Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Kevin McCarthy, sold the leading entry from his Ballycreelly flock at 480gns for a ewe lamb by Clogherny Eric to James  Miller, Luncarty, Perthshire, who also bid 400gns for a ewe lamb by the same sire. McCarthy’s next entry at 420gns was a Yarcombe bred shearling ewe by Westland Fusilier selling to A and H Rae, Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

BALLYMENA FEMALES SELL TO 850gns

Hampshire Down ewes were bid to a top of 850gns in Ballymena at the breed association’s Ireland show and sale on 3 October.

Sale leader at 850gns was a shearling ewe by Wattisfield Bertie Boy and scanned in lamb to Yarcombe Flashman who is within the breed’s top 1%. Bred and exhibited by Kevin and Anna McCarthy, Comber, she sold to Roger Laird, Strabane.

The McCarthy’s offered the next two highest lots from their Ballycreelly flock. Mary Gordon, Enniscrone, Sligo paid 470gns for an aged ewe by Ballycreelly Devilsadvocate and scanned in lamb to Flashman, whilst the day’s reserve champion, a homebred ewe lamb by Wattisfield What Not was secured for 400gns by Edgar Johnston, Cookstown.  A second 400gns bid was made WJ Craig, Ballymena for an in lamb shearling ewe by Yarcombe Topper from Tony McGrath, Dungannon. Another in lamb shearling ewe from the same breeder, this time by Ballycreelly What Next made 380gns to K Wilson, Moneymore.

Selling twice at 380gns were two aged ewes from John and Olive Mercer, Dromore to Brian Kennedy Moira. One was by their homebred Moybrick Tumbler and the other by Knockstacken Quartz. The same purchaser went to 350gns for an aged ewe by Loughan Moss from J,A and J Fletcher, Newtownards. 

A bid of 370gns secured a Parkstock bred aged ewe by Dunraven Jewel from Peter and Heather Stevenson, Portadown from William Young, Magherafelt.

Skipton Females peak at 750 guineas


Hampshire Down ewes sold to a top of 750gns at the North East sale in Skipton on Friday 30 September.

Sale leader at 750gns was a Wilstrop bred shearling ewe by Whitehead Dylan from Graham and Judith Galbraith, Kendal, Cumbria to R Melling, Scarisbrick, Lancashire. The Galbraiths also sold a homebred shearling ewe by Graylen d’Artagnan at 550gns to Peter Beers, Holland, and a a Clogherny Hogan sired ewe lamb at 420gns to Andrew Jones, Wymondham, Norfolk.

Other leading shearling ewes included an entry at 480gns by Maes-Glas Theodore from EB and SA Jones, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire to P Strickland, Lancaster. The same purchaser also secured the top priced ewe lamb at 480gns from Lisa Chasney's Wilstrop flock. She was by Whitehead Gladiator and within the breed’s top 1%. 

Two more shearling ewe entries from EB and SA Jones attracted a 400gns bid. First to go was by Maes-Glas Warrior and sold to P Strickland whilst the second 400gns bid was made by R Melling for a Maes-Glas Musketeer sired entry.
