650gns - Top Priced Shearling Ram from D Middleditch & Son's ST PAUL flock.

650gns - Top Priced Shearling Ram from D Middleditch & Son's ST PAUL flock.

Quality Hampshire Downs met a strong demand selling to a top of 650gns at the Association’s show and sale in Stirling on Wednesday 24 May.

The leading 650gns bid was made for the day’s champion, a shearling ram within the breed’s top 25%, by Thorbeck Heineken (80X14150) by Thorbeck Gladiator and out of a Pode Hole bred ewe (by Pode Hole Guiness) from Mrs and Mrs D Middleditch and Son’s St Paul flock, Sudbury, Suffolk. The buyer was Jodi Hooks and Liam Gouldthorpe taking him home to their Halikeld flock in North Yorkshire. Another Heineken sired shearling ram from the same breeders made 450gns selling locally to commercial farmer Kenny Dickson, Fintry, Stirling.

The Middleditch’s success continued in the female ring where they topped the section with a Heineken sired shearling ewe selling at 520gns to Rob Dewey, Lathockar Flock, whilst another shearling ewe by the same sire went for 300gns to Bruce Steel, Powblack Flock.  Junior member Bruce bought a total of 5 females, reinvesting his proceeds from sales of his cross-bred Hampshire Down lambs through the market earlier in the morning.

The day’s second highest call at 600gns was made by Michaela Cornish, Shamrose Flock, Thirsk, for a shearling ram by Wattisfield What If by a homebred ewe from R Brand and Son’s Eastfortune flock, by East Fortune Balfour,.

Heading the ram lamb trade at 420gns was the class winner from Helen Shepherd, Callander Flock.  First time at an official sale, Helen headed off a strong class of seasoned competitors and impressed not only those around the ring but also the judge who bought this well grown lamb by East Fortune Archie, for his Ashley Flock in Northern Ireland.

Heading the ewe lamb trade at 500gns was the reserve champion, an entry within the breed’s top 10%, by the homebred Graylen Harley (by Graylen D’artagnan) from Graham and Judith Galbraith, Endmoor Flock. The buyer was Trevor Todd, Ballynahinch, Co Down, who also went to 400gns for another ewe lamb from the same breeders, this time by Yarcombe Iceman. The Galbraiths sold two Iceman sired shearling ewes at 420gns each. The first entry went to A and H Rae, Ellon, Aberdeenshire, and the second to Glass and Robinson, Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Kevin McCarthy, sold the leading entry from his Ballycreelly flock at 480gns for a ewe lamb by Clogherny Eric to James  Miller, Luncarty, Perthshire, who also bid 400gns for a ewe lamb by the same sire. McCarthy’s next entry at 420gns was a Yarcombe bred shearling ewe by Westland Fusilier selling to A and H Rae, Ellon, Aberdeenshire.
