Carlisle Hampshire Downs peak at 1,100gns
Hampshire Down females met a strong trade selling to a top of 1,100gns at the breed association’s official sale in Carlisle on 23 September.
“Quality ewes and ewe lambs were in demand selling both to established breeders and newcomers at the ringside,” commented breed association secretary, Janet Hill.
Sale leader at 1,100gns was the overall Show Champion, a shearling ewe by Yarcombe Flashman from KP and AE McCarthy, Ballycreely to new breeders M and V Collins, York.
The McCarthy’s secured the next highest lot at 850gns, a ewe within the breed’s top 10% by Yarcombe Topper and scanned in lamb to Ballycreelly Irish Ranger who is within the breed’s top 1%. She sold to M Jones and R Smith, Telford who also went to 600gns twice for two more entries. First was another ewe within the breed’s top 10% from the McCarthys, this time by Ballycreelly What The Devil, whilst the couple’s second 600gns bid was made for a ewe lamb by Kelsey Icon from Graham and Judith Galbraith, Graylen Flock .
The Galbraiths also took the third highest bid of the day at 800gns for a shearling ewe by their homebred Graylen Harley to Jodie Hooks, Halikeld who also paid 700gns for same breeders’ Reserve Champion, an eyecatching ewe lamb sired by Kelsey Icon who has figures to match her looks. Jodie Hooks also secured for 650gns a ewe lamb by Clogherny Eric from KP and AE McCarthy.
Graylen stock were again in demand with a Yarcombe Iceman sired shearling ewe selling for 650gns to Louis Stainthorpe, Whitby.
Leading the older ewes both in the show and the sale was Alan and Fiona McCornick’s Ardachie Flock, winning the class and selling for 620gns a home-bred two shear ewe by Ardachie Alfie to Carl and Julie Padgett, Tilerybank.
Two shearling ewes shared a 600gns bid. First was by the homebred Glanrafon Marley from Borsey and Sivill, selling to Adam Strickland, Lambrigg whilst an entry by Maes-Glas Gabriel from E and B and SA Jones, sold to Stephen Short, Highcliffe.
First prized shearling ram from the Jones’ Maes Glas flock sold for 400gns to QMS Borders Monitor farm hosts, R Mitchell and Sons, Hawick, Roxburghshire who also took a ram lamb at 400gns from the same home and a ewe lamb at 420gns from McCarthy, Ballycreelly.
