Breed in Demand at NI Export Sale

The Hampshire Down sheep NI club held their annual Export sale last Saturday 22nd June at Beatties Livestock Mart, Omagh. The sale was a flying success, seeing over half the sheep heading to ROI, GB, France and Belgium.

The show which was sponsored by Newtown Ground Engineering was judged by Mr Michael White of Dublin. Michael, who has been breeding Hampshire Downs for nearly 10 years under the Whitehart prefix.

In the Shearling Ram class, Michael placed a strong shearling Ram from A&V McFadden’s flock at the top. The Ram bred by Ashley Blackjack and from a Ashely Ewe went on to be crowned Champion on the day and selling for the Top price of the sale at £1000, to Hampshire Down breeders, Colin and Adam Gregg, Ballymena.

The large Ram lamb class gave the judge a great selection to choose from. A well boned Ram Lamb from Colin and Adam Gregg Kildowney flock was placed first. This Ram lamb, bred by Graylen Quartz and from a Kildowney ewe, went on to sell for the second highest price of £980 to Judge Michael White, Dublin. Another outstanding Ram lamb that sold for £950 from John & Olive Mercers Moybrick flock was bought by breeder Alan MacKinnon, Scotland.

The females made their presence at the sale seeing a lovely Shearling ewe from Kevin McCarthy’s flock being placed first and being crowned reserve champion of the show and sale. This Ewe went on to sell for £650 to J Young of Ballynahinch. A very stylish ewe lamb from Kevin McCarthy’s flock was placed first and sold for £520 to Mr Ciaran Clearly, Kilmurray.

Again the females were in high demand, seeing a 100% clearance, but also Rams were very much in demand this year too, with 70% of the rams selling to breeders. The demand from EU and GB was also high, seeing great interest and bidding online. This was reflected in the sales with 62% being exported to ROI, GB, France and Belgium.

The club would like to thank Richard Beattie for his hard work, and to the show sponsor Newtown Ground Engineering LTD. Also a big thank to our Judge Mr Michael White, Dublin.
