The interest in the Hampshire breed remains strong with another flying sale at Carlisle yesterday. All but one of the in lamb sheep found a new home and averages for these were significantly up on last year with five of these lots making 2000gns or over and beating many other breeds female averages on the day. Trade for the ewe lambs was more selective with buyers bidding for the genetics they wanted and with not many rams on offer all those present found new homes.

First lot in the ring and starting the sale off with a bang when she made 2800gns was a Treworthal Shearling Ewe from Adrian Rundle from Newquay, Cornwall. This flashy lady won the shearling ewe class and has some notable show wins under her belt this year. With Treworthal breeding on both sides she sells carrying twins by last years Carlisle Champion, Whitby Dracula and makes her way to join the Middleditch Family’s St Paul Flock in Suffolk.

The pre sale Champion was hot on the heels making 2700gns. This was a Glanrafon older ewe from Borsey & Sivill, Denbighshire and very ably shown by Lucas Sivill. This very classy lady was female Champion at the Royal Welsh last year on her only outing and is by Ballycreelly Shamrock and out of a home bred ewe. She sells in lamb with twins by the new stock ram at Glanrafon, Eppleby Lucky Dip and judge Harry Elsden backed up his decision by buying her for his Hertford Flock.

There were two calls of 2500gns, first was for a Treworthal Ewe Lamb from Adrian Rundle, which added to his great day at the sale. Winning the ewe lamb class at the sale, this lamb is another with an impressive show career including female Champion at the Royal Highland and in the top 1% for scan weight. She was sired by Treworthal Firestorm and out of a Lecropt sired ewe. She heads to Suffolk for the Middleditch Family with the top price ewe.

The other 2500gns bid was for the Male Champion, the Westland bred shearling ram from Stephen Short, Highcliffe, Halifax. This ram has been very successful on the show circuit this year winning Breed Champion at Great Yorkshire and Reserve Breed Champion at the National Show. This was the last chance to purchase Westland breeding from Bim Knight, the ram was sired by Ashwater Maestro with Eastfortune breeding on the dams side. This impressive ram heads to Gary Gorman in County Durham.

The spring born ewe lambs sold exceptionally well with a March born lamb from Louis Stainthorpes Whitby Flock making 950gns. She has been reared outside on grass and she will join the Highcliffe Flock owned by Stephen Short in Halifax.

Ram Lambs topped at 600gns for the first prize winner from Roadinghead Flock of Karl & Arianne Knowles in Ayrshire. He was bought by Elaine Dalgliesh for the Barnhill Flock in Moffat.
