Quality Throughout for the HDSBA National Show
Royal Three Counties Show again played host to the 2024 HDSBA National Show with great entries coming from Cornwall to Dumfries. The biggest class of the day saw 21 ewe lambs, with 18 shearling ewes and 16 trimmed ram lambs, all an impressive sight for those that stopped to watch. Judge for the day was John Mercer from the Moybrick Flock in Northern Ireland and has been in the breed since 1975. He commented ‘I was very impressed by the overall quality of Hampshire Downs on show at the National and thank you to all those who entered’
Mr Mercer picked his Champion from the Recorded Ram Lamb in top 25% of the breed class proving he had looks as well as good performance figures behind him. This was Graylen 24Y2405993 from Graham & Judith Galbraith, Kendal who are no strangers to the prize winners list at National Shows. The Judge said ‘My Champion was an outstanding well balanced ram lamb, true to breed, he displayed tremendous strength, length, mobility and gigot’ This ram lamb was sired by the 4600gns Thornfalcon Odyssey and out of a homebred ewe.
Reserve Champion went to the Shearling Ram Westland Imperial 84L2300639 and exhibited by Stephen Short from the Highcliffe Flock in Halifax. Stephen bought the Westland Flock in the spring after the retirement of Lewis Knight and Stephen is certainly doing the breeding credit by bringing them out so well. ‘The Reserve Champion was an impressive Shearling Ram again true to breed he was a strong, powerful animal well fleshed with plenty of gigot’ commented Mr Mercer.
Female Champion went to the Shearling Ewe 15X2300283 from David, Denise & Harry Middleditch ST-PAUL Flock from Suffolk. Sired by St-Paul Corona Extra and out of a home bred ewe.
Reserve Female Champion went to Treworthal B832400060 from Adrian Rundle from Cornwall. This ewe lamb is sired by Treworthal Firestorm and a home bred ewe.
Chapman & Wadkins Group of Three went on to win the Reserve Interbreed in the Terminal Sire Group of Three class.
