Record Breaking Premier SaleGayle
Trade can only be described as on fire for Saturdays Premier Sale of Hampshire Down Sheep at Shrewsbury Auction Centre, with the record for the top price being broken several times with three lots making over 4000 gns. Commercial buyers seem happy to invest good money in a ram to produce fast finishing lambs and this pushed the pedigree breeders further with ram lambs averaging £1037 for 37 sold.
Topping the ram lambs at 5200gns was a ram lamb from Kevin McCarthy’s Creelly Flock from Northern Ireland. This flock was established as a research and development flock in 2019 and run along side the long established Ballycreelly Flock. D472101344 is sired by the 2019 National Show Champion, Graylen the Maverick and has figures to match his great pedigree. This lamb was not present at Shrewsbury due to the movement restrictions in returning home but was sold to Mr A Stamper from Maryport, Cumbria who is looking to establish a new flock.
Champion of the pre Sale Show and starting the sale off with a bang was 24Y2104321 from the Graylen Flock of Judith & Graham Galbraith, Cumbria which was the first to break record at 4600gns. This ram lamb is the highest indexed ram in the breed and a favourite of the owner. David Taylor from the Bridgehaugh Flock in the Scottish Borders won the bidding war on this one.
The Galbraith’s quickly reinvested their money and bought the first prize trimmed lamb from Lucy Heywood, Thornfalcon Flock from Somerset for 4000gns. This lamb has Ballycreelly blood on both sides of its pedigree and another with similar breeding, from the same stable sold for 1250gns to Matthew Smith and Rebecca Jones from Telford.
Another lamb from Northern Ireland that was not able to make the journey to Shrewsbury from Peter Lawson’s Glenbrook Flock achieved 2000gns. This ram lamb sired by Ashley Springbok will make its way to Suffolk with David & Denise Middleditch for their St Paul Flock.
Making the journey from Stirling, Scotland proved fruitful for McFarlane and Rennie with 1500gns being achieved for their Lecropt lamb. By a home bred ram and out of a Graylen ewe, this lad is in the top 5% of the breed on figures and has a high gigot score of 72. He was bought by Hannah Delaney for her Wittisham Flock in Kent.
Shearling rams topped at 900gns for HC Derryman & Sons, Yarcombe Flock from Devon. Home bred on both sides this one was sold to John Craig, the Lumb Flock from Yorkshire.
After the buoyant trade for the males the females were a little more variable but still achieving a good average of £499.33. Taking the top price of 1400gns was the Galbraiths, Graylen flock again a stylish lamb with figures to match. She heads to Derbyshire to join the Catchadown Flock of Stephanie Percival.
