2023 FLOCK COMPETITION

Flocks are judged on breed type and conformation, uniformity through the various classes of age and sex, together with general health, appearance, management and presentation. Entry forms are available from the Secretary and judging will take place towards the end of September and throughout October.

JUDGE: Geert Dehaese, Belgium

Entries Close: 6th September. Entry Fee £24

CLASSES:

  • LARGE: Flocks with 40 or more ewes on the association register
  • MEDIUM: Flocks with 16 to 39 ewes on the association register
  • SMALL: Flocks with 15 or fewer ewes on the association register

Notes:

‘Ewes’ means yearling or older. Flock size as at close of entries.

All ewes, ewe lambs and stock rams to be presented for judging.

Ram Lambs: Any ram lambs will not be judged as part of the main flock competition unless they have been used as stock rams.  There will be a separate prize for best home-bred ram lambs.

AWARDS:

  • 1st – 4th in each class, plus prizes for best Stock Rams, Breeding Ewes (older ewes and shearlings), Shearling Ewes, Ewe Lambs.
  • Home-bred Ram Lambs
  • Regional Awards
  • Best Novice (Joined since 1st January 2019, not having won any prize in previous flock competitions)
  • Best Junior (age no more than 21, no less than 8 on 1st January 2023)

2023 SHOW POINTS COMPETITION

ENTRIES CLOSE FRIDAY 14TH OCTOBER

CLASSES

THE REDESDALE CUP:  for flocks with 20 or fewer ewes gaining most points at their six most successful shows 2022 (to 7th October 2023)

THE SYMTAG TROPHY: for flocks with 21 or more ewes gaining most points at their six most successful shows 2022 (to 7th October 2023)

Prize certificates will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each class

When calculating your flock size, ‘ewes’ means yearling or older

Flock size as recorded in the association register at close of entries

You do not have to attend six shows (if you have done well at fewer you may still have a chance)

Qualifying classes are: Hampshire Down, Any Other Native Breed, Wool on the Hoof

Points are awarded as follows:

  • 4 Points for a 1st prize
  • 3 Points for a 2nd prize
  • 2 Points for a 3rd prize
  • 1 Point for a 4th prize
  • 4 Bonus Points for Breed Championship, Interbreed Championship or Native/Any Other Breed Championship, including inter-breed pairs or groups (but not including, male/female champion)
  • 2 Bonus Points for Reserve Breed Championship, Reserve Interbreed Championship or Reserve Native/Any Other Breed Championship, including inter-breed pairs or groups (but not including, male/female champion)
  • 1 Bonus Point for Male or Female Champion

 

2023 YOUNG HANDLERS SHOW POINTS COMPETITION

ENTRIES CLOSE FRIDAY 14TH OCTOBER

CLASSES

THE HIGHER GRAWLEY CUP:  for entrants 13 – 18 years of age, gaining most points at shows 2022 (to 7th October 2022)

Prize certificates will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each class

Entrants do not have to be a member in their own right, but sheep must be pedigree Hampshire Downs in the ownership of a current member of HDSBA and comply with the HDSBA rules for showing.

Qualifying classes: Young Handler

Age is calculated as at closing date of entries 2023

Points are awarded as follows:

  • 4 Points for a 1st prize
  • 3 Points for a 2nd prize
  • 2 Points for a 3rd prize
  • 1 Point for a 4th prize
  • 4 Bonus Points for Champion Young Handler
  • 2 Bonus Points for Reserve Champion Young Handler
