What A Fabulous National Show!

Numbers and quality were on show at Royal Three Counties for the HDSBA National Show and served as a great advert for the breed.

153 sheep were entered which was the second largest number from one breed at the show which is fantastic seeing as many other associations held their National Shows at the event. The mammoth task of judging fell to Jon Barnard from the Stourfield Flock in Devon with the biggest class being 28 ewe lambs.

Jon said ‘it was an absolute honour to judge the National show with such an outstanding lineup of exhibits from up and down the country. The quality on show was a credit to all the breeders and the society as a whole, the way in which the sheep were turnout was truly amazing’

This largest ewe lamb class was where the Overall Champion came from for Harry Elsden’s HERTFORD flock. This flashy lady 98Z2301038 has already been successful at Suffolk Show winning the Interbreed. She is sired by the 2022 Premier Sale Champion, St Paul Dark Fruit and out of a Llainterfyn bred ewe by St Paul Bullseye.

The judge commented ‘My champion was full of character and type, she had tremendous width across the shoulder which continued into the loin, and a gigot full of muscle to match. Along with this, she was a lovely tight skinned lamb with lots of style, who will go on to win many more championships’

It was females to the fore with the Reserve Female Champion following all the way to Reserve Breed Champion. This was the shearling ewe from Chapman & Wadkins EPPLEBY Flock, 30N2206208 was bred by the Derryman Family at Yarcombe and purchased as a lamb at the Exeter HDSBA Sale. Sired by Millfields Sergeant and out of a Yarcombe ewe and brought out to perfection by the Eppleby Team.

Male Champion went to the Galbraiths GRAYLEN Ram Lamb from the Recorded class. 24Y2305559 is sired by Rennisons T-Rex and out of a home bred ewe by Graylen Laird.

Harry Elsdens success continued in the Interbreed, winning Reserve Interbreed Pair and Reserve Interbreed Terminal Sire Progeny Group of Three

The HDSBA would like to congratulate all the Members that brought sheep forward in such a great way and made the National Show such a spectacle.
